On the day that 16-year-old Winter Starling had her life and dreams shattered by a sexual assault, she meets Kai, a boy from her high school obsessed with music. They develop a deep friendship, which comes to an abrupt end when Kai unexpectedly has to leave. Winter has no idea why he went or any way to contact him.
Ten years pass, and Winter has constructed a new reality for herself. Now living in Melbourne, she has a successful career in advertising and is engaged to Liam King, a star player in Australian Rules Football. Winter has a perfect life.
During a night out, Winter runs into Kai, now the lead singer of ‘The Stonevilles.’ Winter and Kai rekindle their friendship, and to everyone around them, their attraction is evident. With Kai back in her life, Winter’s past threatens to ruin her relationship with Liam and everything she has worked to achieve. But can she risk losing Kai a second time?
Emotional and edgy, Beautiful Facade is about love, loss, healing, self-discovery, and the messy battle between one’s head and one’s heart.

Beautiful Facade is a look at the way past trauma can affect someone’s life and relationships, even years after the inciting incident. It’s a heavy read dealing with a sensitive topic, but it does have a hopeful ending.
Winter Starling seems to have it all. She has a successful career, she’s engaged to one of the top football players in Australian Football, and as the partner of said football player, she’s becoming a sort of celebrity on her own. Not to mention, her long-lost best friend from high school is back in her life.
But with Kai’s return, memories of her traumatic past start popping up more often, bringing nightmares along with them. Not only that, but her feelings for Kai are more than friendly, something that’s evident to almost everyone around them.
While Winter’s traumatic experience happened while she was a teen, this is an interesting take on how the effects of trauma can last through adulthood. It deals with her coping mechanisms, both good and bad, and focuses on how she works through it.
The story is a little slow at the beginning, but it picks up toward the middle, and is an engaging read from there until the end. Where Beautiful Facade really shines is character description. I was able to picture all of the characters so clearly, from the main characters to the side characters with very little time on the page. Actually, description in general is definitely one of the author’s strong points, as everything is described so well that the locations and characters seem to jump off the page.
The subject matter may be a bit triggering for some people, but the topic of trauma is an important one, and the author did a good job of handling the issue with sensitivity.
I would recommend Beautiful Facade if you’re interested in reading books that deal with trauma, especially those that also feature an element of romance.
